Purpose

One of the most common questions we ask is "what is my purpose in life?".  the question applies not only to our own lives but to the groups and activities we are a part of.  Activity without purpose is chaotic.  as a small group leader, it is your responsibility to clearly state and guide the purpose of your group.  In your effort to encourage the group toward a calling, there should also be a growing sense of individual purpose among the members.  In other words, every member of your group wants to know "what is my purpose?" and "what is our purpose?".

God doesn't waste time.  He uses everything for good and works to bring redemption to every area of our lives.  As we grow in our faith, the purpose of our lives will become more clear to us.  Healthy relationships are driven by calling.  When we love someone well, we show an interest in who they are called to be and where they are in the process of becoming toward their calling.  Do you know the purpose/calling of the members of your group?  Do you know the purpose/calling of your group as a whole?

God has a design for you, the members of your group and the group as a whole.  In healthy relationships with one another, seek out the best ways to discover and encourage a deep sense of purpose!

A Group Without Purpose

How do I know if my group lacks purpose?
  • rambling, small-talk and awkward silence are common
  • its rare that anyone speaks positively of the group outside the group
  • lack of shared activity in a planned direction
  • members are easily distracted, confused and frustrated

Leading In Purpose

purpose does not grow on accident.  if your small group struggles in this area, a plan is needed.  While the four training areas will be helpful in the long run, here are some quick ideas:
  • verbally share how god has called you
  • identify a need and ask everyone to give towards it
  • corporately pray for someones calling
  • set a small group goal and ask everyone to chip in

Characteristics of Purposeful Relationships

Over the next twelve months, we'll focus on four characteristics of healthy relationships: humility, prayer, risk and generosity.  During the month of any particular focus, you'll have an opportunity to dig deep in personal growth, leadership development and application to your specific small group.  You'll be able to work with other small group leaders to discover what is working and not working in their environment.  Click on one of the characteristics below to learn more!
