what is prayer?
“I’ll be praying for you.” How many times have we said that and then walked away and completely forgotten about another’s deep personal need? Even with the best of intentions, sometimes we use prayer as an afterthought when it should be our first response. As we pray, we listen. There is greater weight in the silent spaces than in our words. God has wisdom to impart, and His words change everything.  Jesus prayed for others. Jesus prayed with others. He prayed corporately and alone, in joy and sorrow, full of life and facing death, always desiring the will of His Father. Jesus prayed without ceasing. We are called to do the same, and we have been given the same opportunity to connect with God on this deepest level.Prayer is multi-faceted. It contains elements of praise and adoration, humble admittance of sin, seeking God for direction and provision, and giving thanks for who God is and what He has done. When prayer is done together, it binds us in mutual adoration toward God, and connects us in love and support of one another. How can we pray for one another today?
A group without prayer
How do I know if my group lacks prayer?
  • GROUP MEMBERS DON’T PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER TOGETHER OR THROUGHOUT THE WEEK
  • THE GROUP DOESN’T SEEK THE SPIRIT’S WISDOM IN HOW TO ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER
  • PRAYER TIME RESEMBLES MORE OF A GOSSIP SESSION THAN OF GENUINE CARE AND SUPPORT
  • GROUP MEMBERS FEEL GENERALLY DISCONNECTED FROM EACH OTHER SPIRITUALLY
leading in prayer
prayer does not grow on accident.  if your small group struggles in this area, a plan is needed.  While the four training areas will be helpful in the long run, here are some quick ideas:
  • PROVIDE GROUP SPACE FOR CORPORATE PRAYER AND REFLECTIOn
  • As you live a life of prayer, check in with those you pray for
  • ENCOURAGE CORPORATE PRAYERS OF PRAISE, ADORATION, CONFESSION, AND THANKSGIVING
  • ENCOURAGE DAILY PRAYER SUPPORT FOR ONE ANOTHER
